PC class for disabled persons. Activity Report
The year 2000.
Name:Hiroshi Nagai
I have only started the computer 2 months ago. I was very hesitant to
becoming a Supporter because I did not have much experience nor the
knowledge, but Mr.Shouji the Chief of Secretariat had suggested to try, so I
did.
On the day of the class, I arrived a little early. When I got there, there
were already people in wheelchairs, people with canes, and people with
attendants waiting in the classroom. I went in the classroom feeling
nervous. The person I was in charge of, Mr. Y, came in with a wheelchair and
an attendant, and was not able to use his legs and his right hand. I changed
the mouse setting for the left-handed. After that we started typing the
keyboard. He had a very hard time typing the works because he had
difficulties moving his left hand. He had to put a lot of effort into moving
his left hand to go where he wanted it to go, and was sweating. Even when he
was able to take his finger to the right key, when he pressed on a key, his
finger would move and press a different key. We found out that if I hold his
left hand, he was able to press the right key. Even though we were behind
everyone, we were able to finish the address side of the postcard on day 1.
The next day, we made the picture side of the postcard. By getting
permission from the instructor, we made the postcard using a different
method from others. Like the lesson before, Mr. Y was trying very hard and
sweating. When his attendant and I help Mr. Y, there were fewer mistakes.
Two and a half hours later, we were able to create a postcard that would be
praised by everyone. Mr. Y asked a lot of questions about the special
instructions for the disabled. I tried to answer every questions he had with
all the information that I had, but when these technical questions are asked
I fell like I am not good enough.
Few days later, I received a postcard with illustration from Mr. Y. I was
very touched by this. I think I learned more from Mr. Y than I taught him
these 2 days.
