PC Support Report

PC class for disabled persons. Activity Report.
The year 2000.

Name: Hukuichi Ishii

I started using the computer as a hobby after I retired. Right now I am volunteering as a Supporter. One day, I was asked to support a class for the disabled.

When I encounter a disabled person, for a brief second, I become speechless. >From my own experience, I know this reaction put them in an awkward position and hurt them psychologically. Up until 4th grade, my daughter was not able to run normally. At a "sport day" at school, my daughter would run and trip, run and trip. As my daughter came running to me with a big smile, I had a difficult time greeting her with a smile. The thought of my daughter come to my mind, for the brief second that I become speechless.

After this uneasy brief second, I began supporting a lady in her early 60s who was not able to use her right hand. This was her first time touching a computer, and had an angry expression on her face. The mouse had been placed on the right side. She could only use her left hand, no wonder she was unhappy. I placed the mouse on the left side, and the class begun. One can operate most of the computer by using only left hand. Even though she made mistakes typing, seeing the screen, once the mistakes were fixed, made her very happy. When she saw her finished postcard, she was a little shy about it but I could tell she was very happy about it. It made me happy.

Computer is a tool that would open many doors for the disabled. Just like the way cars changed people's life 50 years ago, a tool can change one's life dramatically. I hope that a computer will make everyonefs life rich, and allow the healthy and the disabled gain something from the society. This experience has given me strength. Thank you.
