Shouji Report

IT learning environment with seniorsf manpower.
-Seniors are not as useless as people think

Heiya Shouji

1. Introduction

Many people have been talking about whether we should have more computers at public places for citizens to learn the IT. At this point, the most popular classes taken at public halls and citizensfcenter are PC classes.

Sendai Senior Net Club was established in May 1998, by members who attended the gEnjoying PC from 60 years oldh, held at Sendai Central Post Office Information Plaza. Just teaching the seniors how to use a PC does no good for them. It is like a student going to a lecture and just listeningAgaining nothing. I have been thinking that it is important for citizens to participate in the community activities and solve problems quickly rather than government providing educational classes. Therefore, I asked the people who took the computer classes to share what they have learned in the class with the other beginners. This was the beginning of this club.
I know that it would be very difficult for seniors who had taken 10-15 hour classes to be a computer instructor, and when we first started the club, the progress was very slow.

However, in 2000, 3 years after the club started, our club had 100 Senior Supporters, 175 days of actual in-class teaching days a year , and more than 8000 people in Sendai Area took our classes, and many peoplepaid attention to our club as an important role in their communities, schools, and education.
